OPC asks South-West, Kwara, Kogi govs to declare a security emergency after Kwara killings, urging coordinated action against rising insecurity

The Oodua People’s Congress has called on governors of the South-West, as well as Kwara, Kogi and other Yoruba-speaking states, to declare a state of emergency on security following renewed violence in parts of Kwara State.

The call was made in a statement issued by the Chairman of Dr. Frederick Fasehun’s OPC Caretaker Committee, Kazeem Lawal, after reports of the killing of over 100 persons in Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Lawal described the incident as “heartbreaking and provocative,” urging state governments to treat the situation with urgency and avoid politicising security concerns.

“Governors of the 10 Yoruba-speaking states must immediately declare a state of emergency on security to reflect the gravity of the situation,” he said.

“All hands must be mobilised to identify, locate and neutralise those responsible for these attacks.”

The OPC urged the Federal Government, the Kwara State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend those behind the killings and ensure they face justice.

Lawal said those responsible for the attacks must be tracked, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law, adding that decisive action would serve as a deterrent.

The group also called for closer collaboration among state governments in the region to develop rapid and coordinated security responses.

Reaffirming its stance on community protection, the OPC said it would continue to advocate lawful measures to safeguard lives and property in Yoruba-speaking areas.

The organisation urged the Nigeria Police, the Armed Forces and other security agencies to adopt proactive strategies in tackling non-state actors and criminal groups operating across the country.

According to the statement, addressing insecurity requires a united front by governments at all levels, security agencies, and communities.
