Oyo deserves better healthcare, concerned citizen tells Gov. Makinde

Citizen advocate Faleye Oluwatosin Simon urges Governor Seyi Makinde to urgently fix Oyo State’s collapsing healthcare system

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] powerful open letter by Faleye Oluwatosin Simon has sparked renewed calls for urgent reform in Oyo State’s public health system.

Addressed to Governor Seyi Makinde, the letter highlights the worsening condition of hospitals and clinics across the state.

According to Simon, the healthcare situation in Oyo State is dire. Many public health facilities are unequipped, understaffed, and in some cases, non-functional.

He pointed out that if the capital city, Ibadan, struggles with basic services, rural communities are likely faring much worse.

He criticised what he called a “concerning silence” from the state’s health leadership, particularly naming the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, for the continued failures in addressing urgent health issues.

He further challenged the governor to focus less on prestige projects and more on essential services that directly impact lives.

“Our people are suffering. Pregnant women are left without proper care. Children die from preventable illnesses. Patients are turned away due to lack of drugs, equipment, or medical personnel,” Simon stated.

“Good healthcare is not a luxury. It is a basic right.”

In his appeal, Simon called on Governor Makinde to prioritise health, restore decaying hospitals, employ more medical professionals, and hold officials accountable.

He warned that the administration’s legacy would ultimately be defined by its actions on healthcare.

With general elections on the horizon, the letter serves as both a wake-up call and a reminder that public health must take precedence over politics. Oyo State, Simon argues, deserves a health system that works—for everyone.
