Rotimi Amaechi, the vice presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, announced the death of his mother, Mrs Mary Amaechi, who died peacefully at the age of 89 on Thursday, 16 July 2026.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the media office of the former Rivers State governor and former Minister of Transportation.

The family described Mary Amaechi as a beloved matriarch whose life was defined by faith, service and an enduring commitment to her family and community.
According to the statement, Mary Amaechi was widely respected as a community women’s leader and a Christian leader who remained steadfast in her faith throughout her life.
The family said the late matriarch was known for bringing relatives together in love, peace and unity while extending warmth and kindness to people beyond her immediate circle.
The statement described her as “a cherished matriarch who held her family together in love, peace, and unity.”
It added: “She was a community women leader and Christian leader, whose belief and faith in God was firm and resolute. She was loved and highly respected in her community, and will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support for those around her and beyond.”
The media office said the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, David Mark, alongside Rotimi Amaechi and the entire family, expressed profound gratitude for the outpouring of condolences and messages of support received since the announcement.
“The family appreciates the continued thoughts and prayers from friends, supporters, and well wishers,” the statement said, adding that details of the funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
The death comes at a significant moment in Nigerian politics, with Rotimi Amaechi playing a prominent role in the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election as the ADC’s vice presidential candidate.
Despite his active political schedule in recent months, including nationwide engagements and public advocacy on governance issues, the family has requested privacy as it mourns the loss of its respected matriarch.
