Tiwa Savage urges calm over Afrobeats ‘Decline’ claims

Tiwa Savage says concerns about Afrobeats decline are misplaced, stressing the need to build stronger industry infrastructure for sustainable growth

Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage, born Tiwatope Omolara Savage, has cautioned against claims that African music is in decline, insisting instead that the industry is undergoing a necessary phase of restructuring and refocus.

Speaking at the Oxford Africa Conference in the United Kingdom, Savage said concerns about slowing momentum in African music should not be interpreted as collapse, but rather as a healthy stage of correction within a fast-growing industry.

She explained that the genre’s rapid expansion in recent years has naturally created a period where attention must shift from visibility to sustainability and infrastructure development.

“I had the absolute pleasure of being a keynote speaker at the Oxford Africa Conference. It was important to highlight that while some may think African music is suffering a decline, we are actually in a healthy cycle,” she said.

Savage added that reduced “noise” in the industry should be seen as an opportunity to build stronger systems that can support long-term growth.

“We now need to focus on building the infrastructure to sustain this industry. Many genres have experienced this, from HipHop, to RnB to Pop. Our industry is no different,” she stated.

She further warned against misinterpreting the current phase, stressing that correction should not be confused with collapse as African music continues to evolve on the global stage.

The singer’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the commercial direction and global competitiveness of Afrobeats, one of Africa’s fastest-growing cultural exports.
