Nollywood actor says filmmaker’s absence from his wedding was due to film promotion, not a falling-out, as fans react online
Nollywood actor Tobi Makinde has dismissed rumours of a fallout with acclaimed filmmaker and actress Funke Akindele, saying there is no strain in their relationship despite her absence from his wedding.

Makinde addressed the speculation during an interview with TVC, shared on Instagram on Friday, after social media users questioned why Akindele did not attend the ceremony.
The actor described the rumours as unfounded, explaining that he had repeatedly clarified the issue and remained grateful for Akindele’s support throughout his career.
“To be honest, I’ve addressed this over and over again. There’s no problem,” Makinde said.
According to him, Akindele was fully occupied with the promotion of one of her films at the time of the wedding, making her absence understandable.
“Her not coming to my wedding is totally understandable. It was a period when she was promoting her film and, to be honest, we all know how it is when she’s promoting her film. She takes her craft seriously, so it’s very understandable,” he said.
Makinde also noted that it is unrealistic to expect every invited guest to attend a wedding, regardless of the relationship they share with the couple.
“Not everybody you invite to your wedding is going to come. I mean, not everybody I invited came. So there’s no problem in that department,” he added.
Reflecting on their professional relationship, the actor credited Akindele with playing a significant role in his journey in Nollywood, describing her as someone who had contributed immensely to his growth.
“That’s somebody who has contributed immensely to my career. It’s not all our films that are being made. That’s what growth is about,” he said.
Makinde rose to wider prominence through his collaborations with Akindele, particularly in productions that have become popular with Nigerian audiences.
Over the years, the actress and filmmaker has earned a reputation for mentoring emerging talents, many of whom have gone on to establish successful careers in the industry.
His remarks quickly sparked reactions on Instagram, where many users defended the actor’s explanation and criticised repeated attempts to create controversy around Akindele’s absence.
One user, identified as #abb.ydek, wrote, “Media, do better. Stop asking sterile questions just to fuel speculation. He has already granted an interview where he clearly stated there is no feud between him and Auntie. Not every narrative needs to be forced.”
Another user, #iamoluwakemisolalove, commented, “Make una rest abeg. The fact that someone does not attend your wedding does not mean they don’t like you. Make everybody grow.”
A third user, #seunie_xoxo, highlighted Makinde’s appreciation for the filmmaker, writing, “‘Someone who has contributed greatly to my career’ that’s enough for me.”
The episode reflects the intense public interest surrounding relationships within Nigeria’s entertainment industry, where the absence of prominent figures from major personal events often fuels speculation.
