Trump commends Tinubu over Nigeria anti-terror efforts

President Donald Trump of the United States has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as decisive leadership in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, with the Nigerian Presidency revealing a personal letter in which the American leader also confirmed the deployment of elite US Special Operations Forces to support the country’s military campaign.

The letter, dated 6 July 2026 and released in Abuja on Wednesday, marks a notable shift in relations between Washington and Abuja after months of diplomatic tensions over security concerns.

In the letter, Trump praised Tinubu’s efforts to confront insecurity, particularly attacks affecting Christian communities, and described the evolving security partnership between both countries as historic.

“Thank you for your thoughtful letter. Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump wrote.

“I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities, and it is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous.”

The US President said the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap had created a robust framework for joint counterterrorism efforts and disclosed that the United States had deployed Special Operations Forces, including members of the Navy SEAL Team 6, to train and support the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

“I am proud to have deployed the United States Special Operations Forces, among the most elite military units anywhere in the world, to equip the brave men and women in the Armed Forces of Nigeria with the skills, tools and intelligence they need to protect your homeland,” Trump stated.

The announcement represents one of the clearest public acknowledgements to date of the deepening military cooperation between the two countries.

The Defence Cooperation Roadmap, formalised earlier this year, followed the establishment of a Joint Working Group in November 2025, co-chaired by the National Security Advisers of both nations to strengthen intelligence sharing, military training and coordinated operations against extremist groups.

The enhanced partnership has already produced significant operational results.

Nigerian authorities said joint operations launched in the Lake Chad Basin in May led to the killing of Abu Bilal al-Minuki, identified as the second-in-command of the Islamic State West Africa Province, alongside dozens of other militants.

The Defence Headquarters later announced that about 175 Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters had been eliminated during the expanded operations.

The disclosure also comes days after US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia visited Abuja for meetings with senior Nigerian officials, where both governments pledged to deepen cooperation on security and regional stability.

The latest development reflects a remarkable diplomatic turnaround. In late 2025, Trump sharply criticised Nigeria over violence affecting Christian communities, threatened sanctions and suggested possible military action if stronger measures were not taken.

The Federal Government rejected allegations that Christians were being specifically targeted, maintaining that terrorism and banditry had claimed both Muslim and Christian victims across several regions.

Since then, President Tinubu declared a national security emergency, expanded military operations across the country’s troubled regions and pursued closer security cooperation with international partners.

Those efforts appear to have helped rebuild confidence between Abuja and Washington, culminating in Trump’s public endorsement of Tinubu’s leadership.

Analysts say the strengthened security partnership will ultimately be judged by sustained intelligence sharing, effective military operations and lasting progress in tackling the root causes of insurgency across northern Nigeria.

For both governments, the renewed cooperation signals a shared determination to confront an evolving terrorist threat that continues to challenge stability across West Africa.
