UNIBEN student shot dead near Ugbowo campus gate in a tragic incident as police investigation begins into the shooting

A part-time student of the University of Benin has been shot dead inside his vehicle near the main entrance of the institution’s Ugbowo campus in a shocking incident that occurred on Sunday.

The student shot dead incident reportedly took place under unclear circumstances close to the busy campus gate, sending shockwaves through the university community.

Eyewitness accounts and a video circulating on social media showed the aftermath of the attack, with the victim slumped inside a vehicle at the scene.

Reports suggest the deceased had just completed his semester examinations before the incident, although this detail remains unverified by authorities.

In a swift reaction, the management of the University of Benin distanced the institution from direct involvement, stating that the killing may be linked to suspected cult-related activities outside the campus environment.

The university expressed deep sorrow over the incident and urged students and staff to remain calm, vigilant, and focused on their academic activities despite the grim development.

It also assured members of the campus community that efforts were ongoing to maintain safety and prevent any disruption within the institution.

The case has heightened concerns over security around the Ugbowo axis, which serves as a major entry point to the university.

As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement regarding the killing or confirm any arrests connected to the incident.

Investigations are expected to continue as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
