US delivers military equipment to Nigerian Air Force

The weekend C-17 flight to Lagos and Kainji follows August security talks in Washington and is meant to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against terrorism in the north.

US delivers military equipment to Nigerian Air Force

United States Africa Command, the United States Air Force and the Nigerian Air Force completed a weekend delivery of Nigerian Air Force equipment to bases in Lagos and Kainji between 4 and 6 September 2026, under a Foreign Military Sales arrangement intended to support Nigeria’s campaign against terrorism.

A United States Air Force C-17 transport aircraft carried the consignment. United States Africa Command later described the flight as partnership in action.

“The equipment is part of a foreign military sales agreement that furthers the U.S.-Nigerian partnership and will aid in Nigeria’s efforts to counter terrorism in the region,” the command said.

The precise contents and value of the latest load have not been published. That gap matters. Without a public inventory, it is difficult to judge how quickly the cargo can change operations on the ground.

The timing is clearer. The flight came less than a month after National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu led a Nigerian delegation to Washington on 12 and 13 August 2026 for the second session of the United States Nigeria Joint Working Group. United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker hosted the talks.

Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Defence Minister Christopher Musa and Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo were among those present.

Those meetings followed the first working group session in Abuja on 22 January 2026, itself convened after the United States designated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern.

The agenda in Washington covered military cooperation, intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism prosecutions, terrorist financing and the protection of vulnerable communities, including Christian communities in the Middle Belt.

Washington said Nigeria had reported the prosecution of hundreds of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa suspects, as well as the recruitment and training of 50,000 additional police officers.

Both sides also recorded unfinished business, including civilian fatalities and weak transparency around humanitarian spending.

Earlier in the year, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu said the relationship had moved beyond statements.

The National Security Adviser pointed to better target identification, joint planning and disruption of terrorist networks, and welcomed a United States pledge to release outstanding defence articles bought over several years, including drones, helicopters, platforms, spare parts and support systems.

That longer history includes earlier United States support for the Nigerian Air Force, most notably the A-29 Super Tucano programme.

The latest flight therefore sits inside an established sales channel rather than a sudden change of policy.

The security need remains severe. Armed groups continue to threaten communities across the North East and parts of the North West.

In the wider Lake Chad Basin, Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa still operate, placing a heavy burden on air support for ground forces.

Balance is required here. Hardware can help. Hardware cannot, by itself, end the crisis.

Training, maintenance, intelligence, logistics and trust in affected communities will decide whether the new kit becomes a vital tool or an expensive spare-parts problem.

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has also stressed that the planned withdrawal of about 200 United States personnel should not be read as a rupture.

Director of Defence Information Major General S. Uba said intelligence cooperation, training and information sharing would continue, and described the drawdown as a mission-specific adjustment.

United States Africa Command struck a similar note on sovereignty. United States military support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the command said, is by invitation and rooted in respect for Nigerian control of its own operations.

For now, the C-17 delivery is a practical step rather than a final answer. Further detail on what arrived, which units will receive it and how soon it will fly will show whether the partnership is producing more than photographs on the tarmac.
