Pereira replaces Sean Dyche, who was dismissed earlier this week following a 0-0 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C..
In a statement on Sunday, Forest confirmed the appointment: “Nottingham Forest is delighted to confirm that Vitor Pereira has been appointed as head coach on an 18-month deal.”
The 57-year-old had previously managed Wolves but was sacked in November after a difficult start to the current campaign.
He had earlier guided the club to Premier League survival in the 2024-25 season after succeeding Gary O’Neil.
Forest’s turbulent campaign has also seen the departures of Nuno Espirito Santo and Ange Postecoglou.
Despite Nuno leading the club to a seventh-place finish last season — securing their first European qualification since 1995-96 — disagreements with owner Evangelos Marinakis reportedly led to his exit.
Pereira’s immediate challenge will be to steer Forest clear of the Premier League relegation zone. The club currently sit three points above the drop with 12 matches remaining.
His first game in charge will be next week’s Europa League play-off round first leg against Fenerbahce S.K..
Pereira built his reputation during a successful spell at FC Porto, where he won back-to-back league titles.
He has also managed Olympiacos, Al Ahli, Shanghai SIPG, Corinthians and Flamengo during a well-travelled coaching career.
