From science to peace: Meet the 2026 Nobel Prize winners

The 2026 Nobel Prize winners have been recognised for groundbreaking contributions across six categories, including medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economic sciences.

The awards celebrate discoveries and achievements that have advanced scientific understanding, enriched literature, supported international justice and deepened knowledge of economic policy.

The final award, the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, was announced on October 12, completing this year’s list of laureates.

In medicine, the prize was awarded jointly to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels, which helped establish optogenetics.

The technique allows researchers to control the activity of nerve cells using light, providing an important tool for studying the brain and nervous system.

Their work has transformed neuroscience by enabling scientists to investigate how specific groups of neurons influence behaviour and biological functions.

Optogenetics has become a valuable research method in efforts to understand neurological conditions and the complex workings of the brain.

The Nobel Prize in Physics went to Francis Halzen for his pioneering work on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the detection of high-energy neutrinos originating from astrophysical sources.

Halzen, a Belgian-born physicist and professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has played a central role in developing neutrino astronomy.

The research offers scientists a different way to investigate distant cosmic events and explore some of the universe’s most energetic processes.

The work has opened new possibilities for observing the cosmos beyond conventional light-based astronomy.

Halzen has described the field as a new way of looking at the universe, adding that larger and more numerous telescopes would be needed to develop it into a mature form of astronomy.

In chemistry, Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai were recognised for contributions to asymmetric organic synthesis, a field concerned with producing molecules in specific mirror-image forms.

The distinction reflects the importance of controlling molecular structure in chemical reactions.

Different mirror-image forms of a molecule can behave differently, making the ability to produce a particular form essential in areas such as pharmaceuticals and materials science.

Soai’s work on asymmetric autocatalysis, widely associated with the Soai reaction, has contributed to scientific understanding of how molecular handedness can emerge and be amplified during chemical reactions.

The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Canadian writer and classicist Anne Carson for an innovative body of work that engages with classical traditions while challenging conventional literary forms.

Carson’s writing blends poetry, essays, translation and scholarship, drawing on ancient Greek literature and philosophy to explore themes such as love, grief, identity and human relationships.

Her notable works include Eros the Bittersweet, Autobiography of Red and If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho. Born in Toronto on June 21, 1950, Carson has also worked in academia, including at the University of Toronto.

The award recognises her distinctive literary approach and her ability to bring ancient texts into conversation with contemporary questions and experiences.

For the Nobel Peace Prize, Navanethem “Navi” Pillay was honoured for her efforts to promote peace, human rights and international law.

Born in Durban, South Africa, in 1941, Pillay has held several influential positions in international justice. She served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014 and has worked with international courts and human rights institutions.

She also chaired the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory from 2021 to 2025.

Her career has focused on accountability, the protection of human rights and the role of international law in addressing conflict and injustice.

The recognition highlights the relationship between human rights protection, legal accountability and the pursuit of lasting peace.

The final category, Economic Sciences, was awarded jointly to Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford for their work on the microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation.

Their research has contributed to understanding how the decisions of households and businesses influence the wider economy, as well as how monetary and fiscal policies affect economic activity.

Hall, born in 1943, is an economist and professor at Stanford University. Woodford, born in 1955, is a professor at Columbia University. Both have made influential contributions to modern macroeconomic theory and the study of economic policy.

Their work helps explain how policymakers can use economic models to assess the effects of policy decisions, particularly when responding to inflation, unemployment and fluctuations in economic growth.

The Nobel Prizes are traditionally presented on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

The Peace Prize ceremony takes place in Oslo, Norway, while the other Nobel awards are presented in Stockholm, Sweden.

This year’s laureates represent a broad range of disciplines, from scientific techniques that allow researchers to control nerve-cell activity to literary works that reinterpret classical traditions and research that informs economic policymaking.

Their achievements underline the continuing influence of scientific discovery, creative expression and international cooperation in addressing complex questions about humanity and the world.
