Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State promised in a New Year’s speech to the people of the state that he would finish all current road construction and other infrastructure projects, promising the people that tough decisions will be made to bring prosperity to the state.

Governor Makinde solicited the support of the people as he outlined his vision for the upcoming year. He emphasized the state’s focus on bringing in more investments and assured that the residents would witness ongoing efforts to prioritize their needs. The governor highlighted key areas of focus and outlined the government’s plans for the state’s development.

“The state looks forward to welcoming more industries as I commission the pilot Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub and start work on the Eruwa Agribusiness Industrial Hub while also looking forward to reaping revenue from the solid minerals sector and completing the state’s first Independent Power Project (IPP) in the new year,” Governor Makinde stated.

He outlined specific projects in the pipeline, including the completion of road projects like the 76.67km Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso Road construction and the 38km Ido-Eruwa Road reconstruction. Additionally, the governor pledged to reconstruct and rehabilitate more feeder roads across Oyo State.

The governor expressed optimism about welcoming investors into the tourism sector, with plans to revitalize the Ibadan Cultural Centre and Agodi Gardens. He also mentioned plans to open up the Eleyele Lake and the Iyake Lake in Ado-Awaye to investor interest.

Reflecting on the economic challenges faced in the last seven months, Governor Makinde acknowledged the removal of fuel subsidy and the peg on the naira to the dollar exchange rate. Despite these challenges, he outlined various steps taken by his administration to provide relief to the citizens, including the Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery (SAfER) program.

The governor affirmed the government’s commitment to low-interest loans for traders, market men and women, youth agropreneurs, and smallholder farmers. He also highlighted initiatives such as the distribution of grains and inputs to smallholder farmers, payment for health insurance for pensioners, and provision of low-cost transportation through the Omituntun buses.

Governor Makinde expressed confidence in the implementation of the 2024 Budget of Economic Recovery, reinforcing the reforms introduced to secure the state’s economy. He urged citizens to work together in implementing the rule of law, emphasizing the importance of a safe and secure environment for investors and tourists.
