The trial of three people who identified as police officers assigned to Zone 2 Command has officially begun, according to the Nigeria Police Force.

This happened when a widely shared video showing police requesting a driver’s tinted permit went viral. On January 25, 2024, a user going by the name @EmmCee_RNB uploaded a video that caused a stir in the public and raised questions about how law enforcement personnel were acting.

In a statement released by the Zone 2 Command Public Relations Officer, SP Ayuba T. Umma, the officers involved have been identified as ASP Kenedy Ereoah, Inspector Ademiluyi Adekunle, and Inspector Ayo Gbenga. These officers are reportedly attached to the Zonal Intelligence Bureau at Zone 2 Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos.

Contrary to initial speculations that the officers might be involved in criminal activities, the official statement clarifies that they were on official duty at the time of the incident. However, their conduct during the encounter with the motorist has been deemed unprofessional, prompting disciplinary action.

The officers are currently facing trial for flouting the directive on tinted permits issued by the Inspector General of Police (IGP). The statement emphasizes that the trial is a response to the breach of professional conduct rather than any criminal intent on the part of the officers.

The Zone 2 Command expresses its commitment to transparency in handling the matter. To ensure fairness, the statement invites the concerned member of the public, who was involved in the incident, to contact the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer for further action. This move underscores the authorities’ dedication to involving the affected party in the investigation process and fostering accountability within the police force.
