Super Eagles striker, Ademola Lookman

Ademola Lookman, Atalanta and Nigeria forward, celebrates his 2024 Ballon d’Or nomination, making him the only African on the shortlist. Lookman enjoyed a stellar season with Atalanta, scoring 17 goals, and shone for Nigeria at AFCON 2024.

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]demola Lookman, forward for Atalanta and Nigeria, described his 2024 Ballon d’Or nomination as a “special feeling.”

Lookman, who has enjoyed a remarkable season, is the only African on the 30-man shortlist for this year’s prestigious award, surpassing compatriots Victor Osimhen and Mohamed Salah.

Joining Atalanta in 2022, Lookman has been exceptional, netting 17 goals and providing 10 assists in 45 appearances during his second season with the Serie A side.

His impressive form continued on the international stage, where he starred for Nigeria at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scoring three goals and leading his team to the final.

Lookman revealed how he learned of his nomination while on international duty with Nigeria’s Super Eagles, sharing his teammate Calvin Bassey’s excitement.

The nomination came on the heels of Lookman’s historic hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final, where Atalanta triumphed 3-0 over Bayer Leverkusen.

His inclusion makes him the eighth Nigerian ever nominated for the Ballon d’Or, with many tipping him as a contender for African Footballer of the Year.

Lookman also excelled in Nigeria’s recent AFCON qualifiers, scoring twice against Benin Republic and narrowly missing a goal in the draw with Rwanda.
