The lawmakers have suspended Alimosho Local Government Chairman, Jelili Sulaimon, indefinitely, citing non-compliance and misconduct.

The lawmakers resolved to transfer the council’s leadership to Vice Chairman, Mr. Akinpelu Johnson, who will now oversee its affairs.

The Assembly’s decision came after Jelili was found to have defied the legislative House’s directives and displayed non-compliance.

The suspension motion was raised by Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, who recalled the chaos that erupted in Iyana-Ipaja, Alimosho, in April 2024.

This incident, which resulted in the death of Mr. Michael Ajayi, was allegedly orchestrated by Jelili.

Okanlawon highlighted the chairman’s continued misconduct during the investigation, including his refusal to cooperate with the Assembly’s committee and failure to adhere to budget and procurement processes.

He also noted significant mismanagement of public funds, prompting a call for Jelili’s suspension under the 1999 Constitution.

Supporting the motion, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Noheem Adams, stressed that the suspension should serve as a warning to other local government chairmen to follow due processes.

Similarly, Hon. Nureni Akinsanya referenced a report from the State Auditor-General, which exposed irregularities in Jelili’s financial records, reinforcing the call for immediate action.

Several other lawmakers, including Hon. Ladi Ajomale and Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh, echoed concerns about Jelili’s behaviour and prayed for additional measures to address widespread governance issues among local council leaders.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to communicate the resolution to relevant authorities, ensuring compliance with the Assembly’s decision.
