AFRIFF debuts the Trailblazer Award to honour late Herbert Wigwe, recognising exceptional contributions to film and creative arts in Nigeria.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) introduced a new award category, the ‘Trailblazer Award,’ dedicated to the late Herbert Wigwe, former Group CEO of Access Holdings PLC, who passed away on 9 February 2024.

The award, launched during AFRIFF’s opening night on Sunday in Victoria Island, Lagos, seeks to celebrate Wigwe’s legacy and his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s creative industries.

AFRIFF founder Chioma Ude highlighted that the Trailblazer Award will honour Nigerians excelling in creative fields, aiming to preserve Wigwe’s commitment to arts and culture.

“This award will recognise Nigerians excelling in creative fields, commemorating Herbert’s legacy in the arts,” Ude stated during the event.

The inaugural recipients of the Trailblazer Award were Afreximbank President Benedict Oramah and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, both recognised for their impactful contributions to African arts and culture.

In his speech, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised Ude’s dedication to promoting AFRIFF and Nigerian entertainment, commending her resilience and commitment to driving the festival forward.

“Chioma, you have been such an inspiration, with a tenacity and commitment that lifts the entire industry,” he said.

Monday saw Nigerian-British actor John Boyega also receive the Trailblazer Award, recognising his outstanding achievements and influence in the film industry.

Boyega, whose career spans globally successful roles and productions, was celebrated as a prominent figure in African cinema.

The ceremony attracted prominent attendees, including comedian Bovi, former Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed, and Hannatu Musawa, the Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy.

The night also served as a powerful tribute to Herbert Wigwe, reinforcing AFRIFF’s mission to celebrate and elevate African creativity on the world stage.
