LASWA swiftly mitigated a potential disaster caused by a poorly installed dredging pipe, ensuring the safety of Lagos waterways
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has once again demonstrated its commitment to safeguarding the safety of Lagos Inland waterways by taking immediate and decisive action to address a significant hazard caused by a poorly installed dredging pipe.

The incident, which occurred along the power line route en route Ikorodu, posed a serious threat to ferry operators and passengers, but LASWA’s prompt response helped avert what could have been a catastrophic accident.
On the morning of Tuesday, March 11, 2025, LASWA’s patrol team received reports about an obstruction in the waterway caused by a dredging pipe that had been improperly installed and left behind by a dredging company.
The pipe blocked the path of two passenger ferries and caused damage to the hulls of the boats, presenting a danger to waterway users.
Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s dedicated patrol team rushed to the scene for an immediate assessment.
After conducting a thorough inspection, they quickly devised a solution to prevent further damage or danger. The team installed marker buoys to demarcate the hazardous area and provide a clear and safe navigation route for passing vessels.
This rapid response by LASWA not only eliminated the immediate risk to passengers and ferry operators but also underscored the authority’s vigilance in managing and monitoring the waterways to ensure the safety of everyone using them.
The quick installation of the marker buoys helped to guide boats safely through the affected area, averting any potential disasters that could have resulted from further damage to the ferries or the waterways infrastructure.
In a statement following the incident, LASWA emphasised the importance of adhering to safety and environmental standards.
The agency urged all dredging companies and marine operators to strictly follow regulations to prevent such hazards from arising in the future.
The public also called for greater collaboration among stakeholders, including dredging companies, boat operators, and waterfront communities, to ensure the continued safety and navigability of Lagos waterways.
This latest intervention by LASWA serves as a reminder of the critical role the agency plays in maintaining the integrity and safety of Lagos’s busy inland waterways.
