A large advertising billboard collapsed on tricycles in Aba, Abia State, during a heavy storm, injuring many and with an unconfirmed number feared dead as rescue operations are underway

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] devastating incident unfolded in Aba, Abia State, on Wednesday afternoon, May 28, 2025, as a massive advertising billboard crashed down on several tricycles carrying passengers.

The collapse, which occurred at the Salad Market junction near the GIA Event Centre, during a heavy downpour accompanied by violent winds, has left many injured and an unconfirmed number feared dead.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the colossal structure came crashing down without warning, trapping tricycles and their occupants beneath its immense weight.

The area was also plunged into darkness as the collapse brought down high-tension electricity wires.

While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed as of press time, emergency responders and local engineers quickly mobilized to the site, joining efforts to rescue survivors from the debris.

Several injured passengers were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention, while bodies of the deceased were reportedly moved to the morgue.

Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing as authorities work to assess the full extent of the tragedy and provide assistance to those affected.
