Unsafe construction in Victoria Island

Unsafe construction in Victoria Island causes panic as residents report falling debris and property damage, urging urgent Lagos State action

Unsafe construction in Victoria Island has triggered alarm among residents and business owners near 28 Saka Tinubu Street, as a building project allegedly overseen by Diplomat Homes Limited continues to pose serious threats to lives and property.

According to distressed occupants of surrounding buildings, the multi-floor construction lacks basic safety standards.

Planks, boulders, and construction debris have reportedly fallen into nearby compounds, damaging cars, walls, and even ceilings.

The unsafe construction in Victoria Island has led to fears of potential injuries or fatalities, especially as the site is active during work hours in a densely populated area.

Residents are now calling on the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to intervene before a tragedy occurs.

“We are living in fear. This is not just a case of inconvenience. It’s life-threatening,” a business owner in one of the neighboring buildings told our reporter.

Eyewitnesses say the developers have failed to provide standard barricades, safety nets, or protective coverings all of which are required by law when erecting buildings near occupied properties.

To make matters more alarming, locals allege that the building is linked to a prominent traditional ruler from the South West, raising concerns that influence or favoritism may be shielding the project from regulatory scrutiny.

Many now question why Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment, and other responsible agencies have not halted the unsafe development despite mounting complaints.

Residents argue that LASBCA’s silence amounts to negligence and warn that further delay could result in irreversible damage or even death.

“We’re not asking for too much,” another resident said. “We’re simply asking the government to enforce the law and protect lives.”
