Shamusideen Oladiti remanded

NURTW leader Shamusideen Oladiti remanded by Lagos court over alleged murder of two men, including a dispatch rider, pending DPP legal advice

Oladiti, a 55-year-old leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), popularly known as Shamelon, was arraigned on a three-count charge of murder, conspiracy and grievous harm.

Magistrate C. M. Akinde ordered his remand in custody, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The defendant, who had been held at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, was brought into the court under heavy security.

According to the charge sheet, he allegedly assaulted Imam Ramon on 27 August 2025 at Lewis Street, Lagos Island, delivering multiple fist blows that left him with severe injuries.

Ramon was taken to Lagos Island General Hospital, Marina, where he later died.

In a separate incident on 17 September, Oladiti and others still at large were accused of attacking a dispatch rider, Omale Samuel, inflicting fatal injuries.

The prosecution, led by SP Anthony Iyeye, told the court that the offences contravened Sections 223, 245, and 411 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015, which prescribe penalties for unlawful assault, conspiracy and culpable homicide.

The defendant’s plea was not taken, but the court directed that the case file be forwarded to the DPP within 30 days. Further hearing has been scheduled for 28 October 2025.

Tensions flared outside the courtroom as angry protesters attempted to lynch the accused before police officers intervened.

The demonstrators, wielding placards with messages such as “Justice for Ramon” and “We demand accelerated prosecution,” voiced outrage that Oladiti was shielded from mob action.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, deployed tactical units to restore order and secure the accused’s transfer from the court premises.

Family members and community representatives of both deceased victims were present at the hearing, visibly distraught and calling for swift justice.
