John Mikel Obi World Cup message: Nigeria can still qualify for 2026 with unity, focus, and responsibility in final qualifiers

The former Super Eagles captain stressed the importance of unity and determination as Nigeria faces two crucial qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic.

Currently third in Group C, Nigeria trails leaders South Africa and Benin by three points.

Speaking on his ObiOne Podcast, Mikel described Nigeria’s qualifying campaign as “hanging by a thread,” but insisted qualification remains achievable if the team focuses and delivers.

“It’s going to be a crime if Nigeria doesn’t make it to the World Cup again,” Mikel said. “Our World Cup fate is in the players’ hands. They have to win these two games—no excuses.”

Drawing on his experience as captain during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Mikel urged stars like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman to show leadership both on and off the pitch.

“At this stage, every off-field problem goes out the window. It’s about the players now. Nigerians are counting on them.”

Despite setbacks in the qualifying run, including five draws in eight matches, Mikel remains confident in the team’s quality.

“We have great players in every department. The defence is solid, the midfield is balanced, and our attackers are among the best in Africa. We just need the mentality, the hunger, and the focus to get it done.”
