Nigeria World Cup qualification hopes hinge on a decisive clash with Benin Republic in Uyo as the Super Eagles fight to keep their 2026 dream alive

Nigeria World Cup qualification hopes will go right down to the wire as the Super Eagles prepare for a decisive final clash against Benin Republic in Uyo on Tuesday.

The battle for Group C of the FIFA World Cup African qualifiers remains finely poised after a tense round of fixtures on Friday left three nations still in contention for the sole automatic ticket to the 2026 tournament.

With just one match left to play, Benin Republic sit top with 17 points, two ahead of South Africa (15) and three clear of Nigeria (14).

The Super Eagles must now win in Uyo and hope for a favourable result elsewhere to keep their dream alive.

In Durban, South Africa were held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe, a major setback for Bafana Bafana, who had hoped to confirm qualification early.

They will now need victory in their final fixture against Rwanda to stand a chance of progressing.

At Polokwane, Nigeria produced a powerful response with a 2–1 win over Lesotho. Captain William Troost-Ekong converted a penalty before Akor Adams doubled the lead, ensuring the Super Eagles remain in the hunt for qualification.

Meanwhile, Benin Republic maintained their form with a disciplined 1–0 win over Rwanda, thanks to a late strike from Tosin Aiyegun.

The result leaves Gernot Rohr’s side one victory away from a potential first-ever World Cup appearance.

Nigeria last featured at the global showpiece in Russia 2018, where they exited in the group stage after a narrow 2–1 defeat to Argentina. They missed the 2022 edition in Qatar following a painful playoff loss to Ghana on away goals.

Decisive Showdown in Uyo

The Super Eagles now face a must-win tie against Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Tuesday, October 14.

Victory is essential to stay in contention, though Nigeria’s fate may also depend on South Africa’s result against Rwanda.

To qualify, Nigeria must win convincingly while hoping that South Africa drop points. A draw in Mbombela, combined with a Nigerian win by at least two goals, could see the Eagles finish top on goal difference.

Chelle Unfazed by Lookman Suspension

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has dismissed fears that the absence of Ademola Lookman suspended after receiving a second yellow card against Lesotho will affect the team’s focus.

“The suspension is unfortunate, but the team has the strength and character to win,” Chelle said after the match.

With everything on the line, Tuesday’s encounter in Uyo promises to be a defining moment for Nigerian football one that could either rekindle the Super Eagles’ World Cup dream or deepen the pain of another near miss.
