John Obi Mikel impressed in midfield as Chelsea Legends lost 1-0 to Liverpool Legends in a charity match at Stamford Bridge

John Obi Mikel rolled back the years at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea Legends fell 1-0 to Liverpool Legends in a thrilling charity encounter on Saturday.

Despite the narrow defeat, Mikel’s commanding display in midfield reminded fans of his brilliance during his decade-long career at the club.

The former Super Eagles captain partnered a host of former Chelsea greats including John Terry, Petr Čech, Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and Diego Costa as they faced off against their Liverpool counterparts in front of a jubilant west London crowd.

Mikel, who was rated 8 out of 10 by match observers, controlled the tempo in midfield with poise and precision. The Irish Sun lauded his fitness and composure, describing him as “fit as a fiddle” and praising his ability to “do the simple things well.”

His performance stood out as one of the brightest in a game that was decided by Ryan Babel’s late strike for the Reds.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner enjoyed a glittering spell at Chelsea, lifting two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, and both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League before his 2017 departure.

Since announcing his retirement in 2022, Mikel has occasionally appeared in legends’ matches, much to the delight of Blues supporters.

Celestine Babayaro, another Nigerian and former Chelsea favourite, also featured, coming off the bench to replace William Gallas in the second half.

Though his cameo was brief, it evoked fond memories of his time with the club during the early 2000s, when his flair and energy on the left flank earned him admiration from fans.

The charity fixture, organised to support the Chelsea FC Foundation and the Chelsea Players’ Trust, offered fans an evening filled with nostalgia and entertainment.

Eden Hazard delivered a mesmerising cameo, while Diego Costa reignited old rivalries with his fiery temperament — much to the amusement of the spectators.

Ultimately, Ryan Babel stole the show with a clinical finish in the dying moments, securing victory for Liverpool Legends and completing a double over the Blues after last season’s triumph at Anfield.

Yet for Chelsea supporters, the evening belonged to John Obi Mikel, whose elegant performance and professionalism once again reminded everyone why he remains one of the club’s most respected midfielders.
