Enugu State Government confirms arrest of Ozioma Okonkwo for allegedly defiling his two daughters, aged two and five, pledging full prosecution.

Enugu State Government has confirmed the arrest of one Ozioma Okonkwo for allegedly defiling his two biological daughters, aged two and five, in a deeply disturbing case that has sparked outrage across the state.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Okonkwo, a native of Imo State residing in Enugu, was arrested on the night of Saturday, 25th October 2025, following a tip-off from a concerned citizen.

The statement revealed that the suspect is currently in police custody and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.

The two children have been placed in a government-approved shelter where they are receiving medical attention and psychosocial support, while their mother — described as traumatised — is undergoing therapy under the ministry’s supervision.

“The Enugu State Government commends the Nigeria Police Force for their swift and professional response, which led to the prompt arrest of the suspect,” the ministry stated.

Reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on sexual and gender-based violence, the ministry condemned the act as “a heart-wrenching and unacceptable crime against innocence.”

It further added, “The Enugu State Government under the leadership of Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah remains unwavering in its commitment to protect every child and ensure that perpetrators of such evil acts are brought to justice. No child should ever have to endure such trauma, especially from those meant to provide care and protection.”

Authorities also expressed appreciation to vigilant citizens whose timely information led to the suspect’s arrest and encouraged continued cooperation in safeguarding women and children’s rights.

The government reminded residents that anyone found guilty of such heinous acts would face the full weight of the law.
