Governor Alex Otti raises NYSC monthly allowances in Abia State to as high as ₦50,000, enhancing youth empowerment and workforce development
Abia State Governor Alex Otti has approved a significant increase in monthly allowances for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state, raising stipends from ₦4,000 to as much as ₦50,000.

The new allowance structure sets a ₦20,000 base monthly allowance for all corps members in Abia.
Additional payments are offered depending on deployment: those serving in state government establishments receive ₦10,000 extra, while medical and teaching corps members earn an additional ₦30,000, according to a statement from the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Njoku Ukoha.
“In addition to the Federal Government’s increased monthly NYSC allowance of ₦77,000, all corps members in Abia will now earn a base of ₦20,000. Those serving in state government establishments, especially teaching and medical personnel, will earn additional allowances to motivate participation and bridge human capacity gaps,” the statement read.
This adjustment marks the first major increment in 27 years, reflecting Governor Otti’s commitment to youth empowerment and workforce development in Abia.
Ukoha emphasized that the state has consistently supported corps members by renovating the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende Local Government Area, upgrading internal roads, installing power infrastructure, and improving facilities—even though the camp is federal property.
The statement further highlighted that Otti’s government recently implemented the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CHSS) for healthcare workers, extending it to local government staff, and allocates about 35% of the state’s budget to healthcare and education—pillars of human capital and institutional development.
“Governor Otti’s reforms are designed to make service rewarding for corps members and encourage young professionals to contribute meaningfully to Abia’s growth. This move sends a clear message: the state is serious about empowering youth, rewarding excellence, and building a future where service is truly valued,” the statement added.
With the new allowances, Abia State now ranks among the highest-paying states for NYSC members in Nigeria, joining other progressive states such as Adamawa, where Governor Ahmadu Fintiri recently raised stipends from ₦20,000 to ₦30,000.
