Cristiano Ronaldo escapes red card ban ahead of 2026 World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo clears red card ban after FIFA suspends two matches, making him available for Portugal’s opening game at the 2026 World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo will be available to feature in Portugal’s opening match of the 2026 World Cup after FIFA suspended the remainder of his three-match red card ban.

The Portuguese talisman received a red card during a World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland earlier this month after swinging an elbow at defender Dara O’Shea.

Ronaldo subsequently served a one-match suspension in Portugal’s final qualifier against Armenia.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee confirmed on Wednesday that the final two games of the suspension have been placed under a one-year probation.

If Ronaldo commits a similar infraction during this period, the suspended matches will be automatically enforced for Portugal’s next official games.

“In line with Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the serving of the two remaining matches has been suspended under a one-year probation period. If Cristiano Ronaldo commits another infringement of a similar nature, the suspension shall be deemed automatically revoked,” FIFA said in a statement.

The 40-year-old forward, who remains a central figure in Portugal’s World Cup campaign, now faces no immediate restrictions and is cleared to play in the tournament’s opening fixture.

The ruling allows Portugal to benefit from Ronaldo’s experience and leadership as they begin their campaign in the global showcase next year.
