CAF unveils the CAF referee List for AFCON 2025 with 73 officials selected, but no Nigerian referee included

It was announced on Thursday that the CAF referee list for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025, will feature 73 match officials drawn from across the continent, with no Nigerian referee included in what many have described as a surprising omission.

The tournament is scheduled to run from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.

CAF confirmed that the appointed officials consist of 28 referees, 31 assistant referees and 14 VAR specialists.

The football body said the selected individuals represent all regions of Africa and include some of the continent’s most seasoned figures, many of whom have officiated in major CAF competitions over recent years.

All officials are expected to arrive in Morocco on 15 December for a preparatory programme led by CAF’s Referees Department.

The course will deliver physical, technical and theoretical assessments aimed at ensuring they reach peak performance during the championship.

CAF noted that the rigorous preparation forms part of its broader push for integrity, operational excellence and higher technical standards in African football.

According to CAF, this year’s selection reflects a deliberate emphasis on experience, quality and consistency, elements the organisation said are essential to maintaining fairness in Africa’s biggest football competition.
