Katsina tertiary strike suspension announced as state owned institutions resume talks over salary increments and welfare demands

The Joint Consultative Forum of tertiary institutions owned by the Katsina State Government has announced a Katsina tertiary strike suspension, bringing temporary relief to students and parents across the state.

The decision was disclosed on Saturday by the forum’s chairman, Dr Muhammad Nasir Gidado, in a statement issued in Katsina.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalled that the forum embarked on a two week warning strike on January 12 2026 over what it described as the state government’s failure to address critical welfare demands affecting academic and non academic staff.

Dr Nasir Gidado said the unresolved issues included the non approval and non implementation of the 35 per cent and 25 per cent salary increments for staff of the affected institutions.

He added that the forum also demanded the immediate implementation of proper placement for non migrated staff on the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure CONTISS 15.

According to him the forum further raised concerns over what it described as an unsympathetic increase in students registration fees without regard to the prevailing economic hardship which has negatively affected enrolment.

He said the Katsina tertiary strike suspension followed the intervention of key stakeholders and respected indigenes of the state who appealed for dialogue.

Dr Nasir Gidado said it was agreed that negotiations would commence immediately between the forum and the state government to resolve all outstanding issues.

In view of the development he called on all members to resume work with immediate effect and continue their duties with commitment and professionalism.

The institutions affected by the suspension include Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic Isa Kaita College of Education Dutsinma Yusuf Bala Usman College of Education and Legal Studies Daura as well as the College of Nursing Sciences Katsina and Malumfashi campuses.

Others are the College of Health Science and Technology Daura and Kankia campuses and the Institute of Technology and Management.

While appreciating parents and students for their patience during the strike Dr Nasir Gidado assured that the forum remains resolute in pursuing its demands through sustained engagement with the government.

The Katsina tertiary strike suspension is expected to restore academic activities while negotiations continue to prevent further disruption in the state owned institutions.
