Traders at Onitsha Market in Anambra protest the one-week closure ordered by Governor Soludo, showing support for Nnamdi Kanu and denouncing sit-at-home orders

Traders at Onitsha Market in Anambra State staged a protest on Tuesday following a one-week closure ordered by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

In videos circulating on X and Facebook, traders were seen holding placards, chanting solidarity songs, and expressing support for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Some of the chants included, “Soludo, we no go gree o” and “Say no to Monday.”

The Onitsha Main Market had been barricaded by security agencies enforcing the closure, with hundreds of personnel, Armoured Personnel Carriers, and Hillux vans positioned at strategic locations.

The closure was ordered after traders and market leadership refused to resume business, ignoring repeated government appeals.

Soludo highlighted that the persistent Monday sit-at-home costs Anambra State roughly N8 billion weekly, contributing to a regional loss of N19.6 billion in the South-East.

The IPOB has condemned the market shutdown, calling it punitive and intimidating.
