Oyo State House of Assembly rejects Ibrahim Shittu’s apology over defamatory remarks, calling it insincere and lacking genuine remorse

The Oyo State House of Assembly has rejected the apology of Ibrahim Shittu, the lawmaker representing Saki West State Constituency, describing it as “reserved and unremorseful.”

The house said Shittu’s apology failed to meet the ethical standards expected of legislators.

The controversy began when Majority Leader Sanjo Adedoyin, representing Ogbomoso South, accused Shittu on January 20 of making defamatory and malicious allegations against him and the assembly’s leadership.

Adedoyin raised the matter as a personal explanation during the first plenary sitting of 2026.

Shittu’s remarks, made during a public event in Saki Town and circulated widely on social media, were faulted by lawmakers for being reckless and unfounded, capable of undermining public confidence in the legislature.

The Ethics and Privileges Committee, chaired by Gbenga Oyekola, reviewed legislative instruments, oath of office documents, and the viral video footage.

The committee found that Shittu’s allegations lacked credible proof and brought the assembly into disrepute.

Members from both parties, including Luqman Jimoh (APC) and Sola Owolabi (PDP), pleaded for leniency.

However, the house rejected Shittu’s apology, describing it as insincere and insufficient, with Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin emphasizing that a formal, unreserved written apology was required.

The matter has now been referred back to the Ethics and Privileges Committee for recommendations on appropriate disciplinary action against Shittu.
