The endorsement was made in London on Tuesday following Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Premier League London derby.
Schmeichel highlighted Raya’s remarkable development since joining Arsenal permanently in 2024 after an initial loan from Brentford.
The former Manchester United star noted that Raya had successfully secured his position as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper despite strong competition from Aaron Ramsdale.
“I did not understand when Raya came from Brentford to join Arsenal because they already had Aaron Ramsdale performing very well,” Schmeichel said.
“Over the last three seasons, Raya has grown immensely and become arguably the most improved player in the league.”
Raya’s progress has coincided with Arsenal’s push for the Premier League title, with the London club currently holding a narrow points advantage over Manchester City.
Schmeichel’s praise underscores the influence of Raya’s consistent performances on Arsenal’s campaign.
Arsenal fans celebrated Raya’s contribution during the derby, applauding his crucial saves that kept the Gunners ahead.
Analysts have also recognised the goalkeeper’s enhanced decision-making and composure under pressure as defining factors in his rise.
