Argentina Spain Finalissima cancelled as UEFA confirms failure to agree on venue and dates for clash between Euro and Copa América champions

UEFA has confirmed that the highly anticipated Finalissima match between Argentina and Spain has been cancelled after organisers failed to reach an agreement on staging arrangements for the fixture.

The match, which was expected to pit the winners of UEFA Euro 2024 against the champions of 2024 Copa América, had initially been scheduled to take place in Qatar on 27 March.

In a statement released on Sunday, UEFA said extensive discussions had been held with the organisers in Qatar, but the match could not proceed due to the prevailing political situation in the region and disagreements over alternative arrangements.

“After much discussion between UEFA and the organising authorities in Qatar, it is announced today that due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima between UEFA EURO 2024 winners Spain and CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 champions Argentina cannot be played as hoped in Qatar on 27 March,” the statement read.

UEFA described the cancellation as a significant disappointment, noting that Qatar had repeatedly demonstrated its capability to host major international sporting events in world-class facilities.

The governing body also expressed appreciation to the country’s organising committee and authorities for their efforts to stage the match.

Organisers had explored several alternative options to salvage the fixture. One proposal suggested staging the match at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid with an equal split of supporters from both teams. However, the proposal was rejected by Argentina.

A second option involved staging the Finalissima over two legs, one in Madrid on the original date and another in Buenos Aires during a future international window before the 2028 editions of the European Championship and Copa América. That proposal was also declined.

UEFA later sought confirmation from Argentina that the match could still proceed at a neutral European venue either on the original date of 27 March or on an alternative date of 30 March, but the proposal again failed to secure agreement.

Argentina subsequently suggested playing the game after the next World Cup, but Spain had no available dates in their calendar.

The South American side also proposed 31 March as the only date it could play, a schedule UEFA said was not workable.

“As a result, and to UEFA’s regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled,” the statement concluded.

The Finalissima is a prestigious intercontinental fixture that brings together the champions of Europe and South America, reviving a historic rivalry between the two confederations.
