Turkey World Cup Qualification secured with a 1-0 win over Kosovo, marking their return to the tournament for the first time since 2002

Turkey secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday after a decisive 1-0 victory over Kosovo in their European play-off final, ending the hosts’ hopes of a historic first qualification.

The breakthrough came in the 53rd minute when Kerem Aktürkoğlu redirected a shot from Orkun Kökçü into the net, sealing a crucial win for the visitors in a tightly contested encounter.

Turkey, managed by Vincenzo Montella, produced a disciplined performance in a match short on clear chances, capitalising early in the second half through a well-worked move initiated by Kenan Yıldız.

At full-time, captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu, alongside teammates including Arda Güler, celebrated with travelling supporters, waving Turkish flags in a moment of emphatic triumph.

The Turkey World Cup Qualification marks the nation’s return to football’s biggest stage for the first time since 2002, when they reached the semi-finals.

This will be only their third appearance at the tournament, following previous participations in 1954 and 2002.

Montella’s side, currently ranked 22nd in the world, will compete in Group D alongside the United States, Paraguay, and Australia.

They are scheduled to open their campaign against Australia in Vancouver on June 13.

Turkey’s path to qualification included a strong showing in European Group E, where they finished second behind Spain, notably earning a draw away.

They advanced by defeating Romania 1-0 in the play-off semi-final before overcoming Kosovo in the final.

For Kosovo, ranked 78th globally, the defeat brings a valiant campaign to an end.

The team had aimed for a first-ever World Cup appearance after gaining FIFA membership just a decade ago, having impressed in qualifying and staged a dramatic 4-3 semi-final victory over Slovakia.

Despite the disappointment, Kosovo’s progress signals a growing presence on the international stage, while Turkey now look ahead with renewed ambition to make a lasting impact at the 2026 tournament.
