IBAN Mamman attack escalates as broadcasters defend stance on press freedom following controversy over Wike’s threat to journalist Seun Okinbaloye
The Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria has strongly condemned recent remarks by Yusuf Mamman, describing them as an unwarranted attack on its leadership and a misrepresentation of its position on press freedom concerns linked to Minister Nyesom Wike’s comments against journalist Seun Okinbaloye.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Ramalan, and Interim Secretary Fidelis Duker, the association said Mamman’s criticisms followed IBAN’s earlier response to what it described as a threatening statement made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during a public appearance.
The controversy stems from Wike’s alleged remark suggesting he would have “shot” a journalist through a television screen, a comment that triggered widespread concern across the media landscape.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Nigerian Guild of Editors, International Press Institute, and Amnesty International were among several bodies that publicly condemned the statement, alongside civil society groups such as SERAP.
IBAN maintained that its original statement was a measured and necessary response to what it described as a clear and present danger to press freedom.
It argued that dismissing such remarks risks normalising violence against journalists and undermining democratic accountability.
The association further stated that Mamman’s criticism of its position ignores the broader consensus within the media and civil society community, which has consistently warned against rhetoric that could intimidate journalists or weaken constitutional protections for free expression.
According to IBAN, attempts to trivialise threats directed at journalists create a dangerous precedent that may embolden further acts of intimidation.
The body stressed that freedom of the press remains a cornerstone of democratic governance and must be protected against both direct and indirect attacks.
Association also reaffirmed its commitment to defending journalists across the country, noting that media professionals play a critical role in holding public office holders accountable.
It cautioned that any discourse which undermines that role could have far-reaching consequences for democratic institutions.
IBAN urged stakeholders to focus on the substance of the issue rather than diverting attention through personal attacks, reiterating that its position was rooted in collective concern for the safety and independence of journalists.

The statement concluded by calling on Yusuf Mamman to reconsider his stance and align with ongoing efforts to safeguard press freedom, rather than contribute to narratives that could weaken professional solidarity within the media sector.
