NRC confirms five deaths in Warri–Itakpe train derailment as investigations continue and emergency response efforts intensify

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed in Abuja on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, that five people have died following the Warri–Itakpe train derailment, while emergency response teams continue recovery operations and investigations into the cause of the accident remain ongoing.

Opeifa said emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the scene shortly after the derailment occurred on Monday along the major rail corridor linking Warri and Itakpe, with injured passengers evacuated to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

NRC confirmed that the Warri–Itakpe train derailment has prompted intensified safety assessments across the rail network, as authorities seek to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents on one of Nigeria’s key standard gauge routes.

According to the NRC Managing Director, relevant technical teams have been mobilised to determine the precise factors that led to the derailment, which has disrupted both passenger and freight movement across the corridor.

He added that the corporation is working closely with emergency agencies and medical personnel to support affected families, describing the situation as a deeply tragic and sobering development for the national rail system.

“The Warri–Itakpe train derailment has resulted in five confirmed fatalities. Our emergency teams were deployed immediately, and injured passengers were evacuated for urgent medical care,” Opeifa stated.

NRC further assured the public that efforts are underway to restore normal rail operations along the affected route while maintaining strict safety oversight during recovery activities.

Warri–Itakpe line remains one of Nigeria’s most important transport arteries, serving multiple states and facilitating both passenger travel and freight logistics across the country.

Authorities say the investigation into the cause of the derailment will be comprehensive, with findings expected to guide future infrastructure and operational improvements within the railway system.

The incident has drawn renewed attention to rail safety standards in Nigeria, with stakeholders calling for stronger preventive measures and infrastructure upgrades to safeguard passengers.

As recovery efforts continue, the NRC has described the event as a tragic setback but insists that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure accountability and improved safety performance across the network.
