Suspect remanded over alleged assault of 18-year-old woman in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has charged and secured the remand of Emeka Joseph following a viral video that sparked widespread outrage over the alleged assault of Ezeka Chisom, while the Lagos State Government has placed the survivor in protective custody and commenced support services.

The suspect was arraigned before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court on criminal assault charges and subsequently remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre. The case has been adjourned until August 3, 2026.

According to the Lagos State Police Command, preliminary investigations revealed that Ezeka Chisom was allegedly assaulted by Emeka Joseph, with whom she had been cohabiting. Police said the victim sustained injuries to her face.

“The suspect has since been charged to court and remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre, while the case has been adjourned till 3rd August, 2026,” the command said in a statement.

The case gained national attention after videos and photographs circulated on social media showing the young woman with visible injuries, prompting public concern and calls for urgent intervention.

In a significant development, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency said it activated its emergency response protocol immediately after becoming aware of the viral reports on June 22.

Following the intervention, the survivor was moved to protective custody and has begun receiving psychosocial support designed to aid her recovery.

The agency said contact had also been established with members of the survivor’s family as part of ongoing efforts to ensure her safety and long-term protection.

“Our priority remains to support the survivor’s safety, healing, and overall wellbeing,” the agency stated.

One of the major developments arising from the government’s investigation concerns claims circulating online that the suspect had married the young woman.

According to preliminary findings by the Lagos State Government, the purported marriage is false and not legally recognised.

That clarification comes after widespread social media reports alleged that the suspect had brought the 18-year-old woman from Ebonyi State to Lagos as his wife before subjecting her to abuse.

Before the arrest, residents in the area reportedly confronted the suspect over concerns about the woman’s welfare after allegedly noticing visible injuries on her body.

Those accounts formed part of the public outcry that amplified the case online, although the allegations remain subject to ongoing judicial proceedings.

The Lagos State Government commended partner organisations, concerned residents and stakeholders whose swift actions contributed to the survivor’s rescue and protection.

The case has also reignited conversations about the role of communities in identifying and reporting suspected cases of abuse before they escalate into more serious harm.

Reaffirming the command’s position, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, said domestic violence cases would continue to receive prompt attention from law enforcement authorities.

“The Command’s zero tolerance for all forms of domestic violence remains unwavering, and cases involving violence and abuse will continue to receive prompt attention,” the commissioner said.

The Lagos State Government similarly reiterated its firm stance against abuse and pledged continued accountability for offenders.

“The Lagos State Government remains resolute in its zero-tolerance stance against all forms of abuse and will continue to prioritise the protection of survivors and accountability for perpetrators,” the government said.

The case highlights growing collaboration between law enforcement agencies, social welfare authorities and community members in tackling Sexual and Gender-Based Violence across Lagos.

In recent years, the state government has strengthened survivor support systems and public reporting mechanisms as part of broader efforts to combat domestic abuse and protect vulnerable persons.

As legal proceedings continue, authorities say ensuring the survivor’s wellbeing and securing justice through due process remain the central priorities.
