Court grants Miyetti Allah leader Bello Bodejo ₦2bn bail

Bello Bodejo, the National President of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, has been granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja after the court approved a ₦2 billion bond in his ongoing trial over alleged money laundering involving about $2.63 million.

Justice Inyang Ekwo granted the Bello Bodejo ₦2bn Bail application on Monday, ruling that the offences filed against him were bailable and that the court had the discretion to release him under specified conditions.

The judge ordered Bodejo to provide one surety in the same amount, with the surety required to reside in Abuja and possess a three-year tax clearance certificate.

The court also directed that the surety must own landed property in Abuja valued at ₦2 billion, with relevant ownership documents to be verified by the court registrar.

As part of the bail conditions, Bodejo was ordered to surrender his international passport and must obtain court approval before travelling outside Nigeria.

Justice Ekwo adjourned the matter until October 5, 6 and 7, 2026, when trial proceedings are expected to begin.

Bodejo was arraigned on July 9 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on multiple counts relating to alleged violations of Nigeria’s money laundering laws.

He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The EFCC alleged that Bodejo received several cash payments totalling millions of dollars from former Bauchi State Accountant-General Sa’idu Abubakar between 2022 and 2024 without routing the transactions through authorised financial institutions.

According to the anti-graft agency, some of the alleged payments included amounts of $100,000, $200,000, $980,000, $750,000 and $500,000, which it said exceeded legal cash transaction limits.

The commission also alleged that a $100,000 payment made on January 11, 2022, in Abuja, was received outside the banking system and contrary to provisions of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act.

Bodejo has denied the allegations.

During the bail hearing, defence counsel Ahmed Raji (SAN) argued that the offences were bailable under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and urged the court to release his client.

However, EFCC counsel Wahab Shittu (SAN) opposed the application and asked the court to refuse bail.

The court’s decision allows Bodejo to remain free pending the commencement of trial while the legal proceedings continue.
