Celta Vigo stadium hit by fungus scare before opener

La Liga officials are set to inspect Celta Vigo’s Estadio de Balaídos in Vigo, Spain, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, after a suspected fungus outbreak damaged the playing surface ahead of Celta Vigo’s opening La Liga fixture against Osasuna.

The inspection will determine whether the Celta Vigo pitch is safe and suitable for the Spanish top-flight encounter, which is currently scheduled for Sunday night at 20:30 BST.

Reports from Spain indicate that the condition of the 24,870-capacity stadium has raised concerns within La Liga, with officials expected to visit Balaídos within the next 24 hours to assess the extent of the damage.

Celta Vigo have reportedly requested that the fixture be postponed because of the state of the surface, while Osasuna are understood to be open to playing the match as originally scheduled.

The final decision is expected to rest on the findings of the league’s inspection.

A postponement would create another change to an already disrupted opening weekend of the 2026-27 La Liga season.

Celta Vigo had previously been given the option to postpone the Osasuna fixture because striker Borja Iglesias was involved in Spain’s successful World Cup campaign.

The club, however, chose not to use that option.

Three other opening-weekend matches have already been rescheduled because of players’ involvement in the World Cup final.

Valencia’s meeting with Real Betis, Real Madrid’s clash with Real Sociedad and Barcelona’s fixture against Athletic Club have all been moved to later dates.

The pitch issue has emerged shortly before Balaídos was due to welcome competitive football for the new campaign.

The stadium hosted Spain’s friendly against Iraq in June, shortly before Spain went on to claim the 2026 World Cup during the summer.

The condition of the playing surface is particularly significant for Celta Vigo, who had expected to begin the campaign in front of their home supporters.

The club’s home ground has also been undergoing extensive renovation work for more than a decade and is planned to form part of Spain’s venue list for the 2030 World Cup, which Spain will co-host with Portugal and Morocco.

Balaídos currently holds 24,870 spectators, but its capacity is expected to rise to between 40,000 and 44,000 once the renovation project is completed.

The proposed expansion is part of a broader effort to modernise the historic stadium and prepare it for major international football.

For now, however, attention has shifted from the stadium’s long-term transformation to the immediate condition of its playing surface.

A thorough La Liga assessment will determine whether the suspected fungus can be managed quickly enough for Celta Vigo to host Osasuna or whether alternative arrangements will be required.

Celta Vigo’s preference for a postponement reflects the club’s concern over the condition of the surface, while Osasuna’s reported willingness to proceed highlights the differing positions surrounding the fixture.

Until La Liga completes its inspection, the opening match remains scheduled for Sunday.

The decision will provide clarity on whether Celta Vigo can launch the new campaign at Balaídos as planned or face an unexpected delay because of the deteriorating pitch.
