Former Cambridge professor was found unresponsive days after resigning amid plagiarism allegations

Jason Arday, the former University of Cambridge professor who became the institution’s youngest Black professor, was found dead at a property in Battersea, south London, on Friday, August 14, 2026, aged 41, just nine days after resigning from the university amid allegations of plagiarism.

The Metropolitan Police said officers were called by the London Ambulance Service shortly after 3pm following reports of an incident at the property.

Arday was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police spokesperson said: “Sadly, a 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The force said Arday’s next of kin had been informed and were being supported by officers. His death was being treated as unexpected but was not believed to be suspicious.

The case is being investigated by officers from the Met’s Central South Command Unit, with a file to be prepared for the coroner.

The London Ambulance Service said it received the emergency call at 3.06pm and sent an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic in a fast response car and members of its Hazardous Area Response Team.

Arday’s death comes at the end of a turbulent period in a career that had previously been marked by remarkable academic recognition.

He was appointed Professor of Sociology of Education at Cambridge in 2023, becoming the university’s youngest ever Black professor.

Cambridge records show that he was elected to the professorship with effect from March 6, 2023.

His academic work focused extensively on race, inequality, education and the experiences of ethnic minority students in higher education.

Cambridge’s Black Advisory Hub described him as a highly respected scholar whose work examined the under-representation of ethnic minorities in academic careers and racial discrimination in education.

Arday’s appointment had also carried symbolic significance within Cambridge, where he advocated for a more inclusive university environment and encouraged greater representation of Black and minority ethnic people.

That distinguished chapter came under scrutiny in recent months after allegations concerning plagiarism and inconsistencies in accounts of aspects of his professional history.

Arday resigned from Cambridge and Jesus College on August 5, saying the continuing allegations, speculation and public commentary had taken a profound personal toll.

In his resignation statement, Arday described his appointment at Cambridge as “the greatest professional privilege of my life”, while expressing sadness over his decision to leave.

At the time of his death, the controversy surrounding his academic record had not resulted in a publicly announced final finding by Cambridge establishing that he had deliberately committed plagiarism.

His sudden death has consequently brought a tragic and unexpected close to a career that had attracted both significant acclaim and intense scrutiny.

Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice expressed shock and sadness over the news.

“We are desperately saddened to hear this tragic news,” Prentice said. “Our heartfelt sympathies go to Jason Arday’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”)

Arday had also remained a member of Jesus College, Cambridge, where university records listed him as a fellow.

His death was reported on the same week that his autobiography was published in the United States. The book’s UK publication had been scheduled for later in August.

For colleagues and others familiar with his work, Arday’s legacy extends beyond the controversy that surrounded his final days.

His research and public advocacy had placed questions of race, inclusion and inequality at the centre of conversations about British higher education.

The circumstances surrounding Jason Arday dies remain under investigation. Police have not indicated any suspicious circumstances, and no cause of death has been publicly established.
