Fulham head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has backed Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey to emerge as a leader at the Premier League club, with the 26-year-old increasingly taking on greater responsibility ahead of the new season.
Arbeloa’s confidence in Bassey was underlined during Fulham’s final two pre-season fixtures against Málaga and Stuttgart, when the Nigeria international was entrusted with the captain’s armband.

The decision represents a significant vote of confidence in Bassey’s standing within a squad undergoing a new phase under Arbeloa, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid right-back.
Arbeloa believes Bassey’s defensive qualities are particularly suited to the high defensive line and expansive style he wants Fulham to adopt.
“I see Calvin as a proper player, a top player for the style of play I want at Fulham,” Arbeloa said after the Stuttgart match.
“To defend so high with a lot of space in behind, he has everything, and I think he’s a top player.”
The Spaniard went further when discussing Bassey’s character away from the tactical demands of the pitch.
“He’s a funny guy, but when we have to work, he’s the first one.
I really love him, and I want him to be our leader,” Arbeloa added.
The comments provide a powerful indication of the role Arbeloa sees Bassey playing as Fulham prepare for another Premier League campaign.
Bassey’s rise to a potential leadership position represents another important chapter in a career that has taken him from England to Scotland and the Netherlands before returning to the Premier League.
The defender joined Fulham from Ajax in 2023 and has gradually established himself as an important member of the club’s defence.
Bassey made 30 Premier League appearances during the 2025/26 season, starting 28 of those matches, further underlining his importance to Fulham’s defensive structure.
His consistency had already earned significant recognition.
During the 2024/25 campaign, Bassey was voted Fulham’s Player of the Season after making 35 Premier League appearances.
The Nigeria international’s progress has therefore been built on more than his physical qualities.
His durability, willingness to work and ability to defend large spaces have increasingly made him a natural fit for a system that demands defenders to operate aggressively.
Arbeloa’s decision to hand him the captain’s armband during pre-season suggests that the manager is also assessing Bassey’s influence beyond his position at centre-back.
Fulham’s leadership group is expected to include several experienced players, with Bassey being considered alongside Sander Berge, Antonee Robinson and goalkeeper Bernd Leno as part of the senior core capable of guiding younger members of the squad.
For Bassey, the potential move into Fulham’s leadership structure would represent a notable progression.
The defender has already become an established international for Nigeria and played an important role in the Super Eagles’ recent campaigns.
Greater responsibility at club level could further strengthen his influence both on and off the pitch.
Arbeloa’s endorsement also comes at an important stage of the defender’s career.
At 26, Bassey is entering the period when experience, consistency and leadership can become as important as athletic ability for a Premier League defender.
Whether he eventually becomes Fulham’s permanent captain remains to be seen, but the manager’s message is already clear: Bassey is being viewed as much more than a reliable defender.

For Fulham, his emergence could provide a valuable combination of defensive authority, work ethic and personality as Arbeloa begins shaping the team in his own image.
