Popular Nigerian gospel singer Asu Ekiye has confirmed that his 28-year marriage to Kunemofa Asu ended in 2025, with the musician making the announcement publicly in a Facebook post after a year of private reflection.
The disclosure brings to a close a marriage that began in 1998 and produced four children, marking a deeply personal transition for the gospel musician popularly known as the “Prince of the Niger Delta”.

Ekiye did not disclose the circumstances that led to the end of the relationship. Instead, the singer explained that he intentionally waited before speaking publicly, allowing time for emotions to settle and for him to gain perspective on the development.
“After 28 years of a deeply personal journey of growth, experience and reflection, I wish to announce, with a profound sense of sobriety and quiet resignation, that my marriage to Kunemofa Asu has come to an end,” Ekiye said.
The singer stressed that the marriage had ended a year earlier and that his decision to speak out in 2026 was deliberate.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this marriage ended a year ago,” he said, adding that he had waited for “perspective, clarity and quiet acceptance” before making the announcement.
Ekiye said he wanted to approach the end of the relationship without bitterness, describing the moment as the closure of an important chapter in his life.
“I choose to close this chapter with grace, gratitude and dignity, while looking ahead to the possibilities of a new season,” he said.
The announcement has offered a rare glimpse into the private life of a musician whose career and public identity have long been closely associated with gospel music, Christian faith and family.
Ekiye and Kunemofa had previously spoken about aspects of their relationship. In a 2018 interview, the singer recalled that their journey towards marriage did not follow a conventional dating pattern.
According to Ekiye, the relationship developed around shared aspirations, spirituality, intellectual compatibility and mutual attraction.
He also recalled proposing to Kunemofa on the street, saying she responded with excitement before accepting his proposal two weeks later.
At the time, Ekiye described Kunemofa as possessing qualities he had sought in a life partner, including beauty, spirituality, intelligence, focus, enterprise and a strong maternal character.
Their marriage subsequently grew into a family of four children over almost three decades.
The end of the Asu Ekiye marriage comes after a lengthy period in which the singer had largely kept details of his personal life away from public discussion.
Ekiye rose to prominence in Nigeria’s gospel music scene following the release of his 2001 album, Woekilemo.
His musical catalogue has since included songs such as Eniye, Dey by My Side, Seiyo, Miyebibo, Kareyo, featuring gospel singer Eben, Ebikamo and Yemiyemo.
His latest statement does not suggest an immediate change in his professional direction or reveal plans for another relationship.
Instead, the tone of the announcement remains reflective, with Ekiye choosing gratitude and acceptance as he begins what he describes as a new chapter.
