Google has announced a free 12-month Google AI Plus offer for Nigerian students, with Olumide Balogun, Google’s Director for West and East Africa, confirming the initiative as part of efforts to make advanced artificial intelligence tools more accessible to students across Nigeria.
The offer is available to students aged 18 and above enrolled in accredited universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

The subscription, valued at ₦92,400 per student, provides enhanced access to Gemini and several AI-powered learning and productivity tools.
Under the initiative, eligible students can use Gemini, Gemini Live, Deep Research and Guided Learning, alongside customised practice quizzes, unlimited file uploads and 400GB of cloud storage.
Balogun said the initiative was designed to reduce the financial barriers that can prevent students from accessing advanced AI technology.
“AI is the defining technological shift of our generation, and for Nigeria, it is an immediate leapfrog opportunity,” Balogun said.
He added that the programme would help students tackle complex subjects, develop digital skills and compete more confidently in the global economy.
The announcement comes as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in education, research and everyday digital work.
For Nigerian students facing the rising cost of educational resources and technology, access to advanced AI tools at no cost could provide a significant academic boost.
Google has also placed emphasis on using AI as a learning aid rather than simply as a shortcut for completing assignments.
Its Guided Learning feature is designed to provide hints, explanations and guiding questions instead of immediately producing answers.
Google said a Google DeepMind study involving 1,763 West African students found that more than 90 per cent of interactions with Guided Learning focused on understanding concepts, while Gemini provided direct solutions in only two per cent of cases.
The company said teachers can also use Google Classroom to restrict Gemini to Guided Learning mode, allowing students to receive AI assistance while encouraging independent learning.
Google further stated that student and classroom data would not be used to train its artificial intelligence models.
The Nigerian offer is part of a wider rollout covering 27 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa, according to information released alongside the announcement.
Students who benefited from the offer during the previous academic year are also eligible to renew their access for another 12 months, provided they re-verify their student status.
Eligibility is verified through SheerID before students can claim the offer through Google’s designated student AI subscription platform.
The package also expands access to Google’s broader AI ecosystem, including tools intended for research, brainstorming, document analysis and study preparation.
The combination of advanced Gemini access and additional cloud storage could be particularly useful for students handling projects, lecture materials and research documents.
The initiative also reflects Google’s broader push to expand AI literacy and adoption in emerging markets.
The company’s research on AI adoption in emerging economies has identified accessible education, digital skills development and wider access to AI resources as important factors in building an AI-ready workforce.
For Nigerian students, the offer provides a potentially valuable opportunity to experiment with advanced AI tools without bearing the subscription cost for the first year.

The larger question will be how effectively students use the technology to deepen their understanding, improve productivity and build skills that remain useful beyond the subscription period.
