Deadly Alaska plane crash kills eight at US Air Force site

US Air Force Lieutenant General Robert Davis, commander of Alaskan Command, and Clint Johnson, Alaska region chief for the National Transportation Safety Board, confirmed on Thursday, 20 August 2026, that a civilian-contracted aircraft carrying eight people crashed near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site in western Alaska, killing everyone aboard.

The aircraft had departed Anchorage and was believed to have crashed during its approach to Cape Newenham, about 450 miles west of Anchorage.

Johnson said the preliminary information indicated that two pilots and six passengers were aboard.

Search and rescue personnel were sent to the remote site after authorities received reports of an aircraft incident.

Alaskan Command later said Guardian Angel personnel from the 212th Rescue Squadron had reached the crash area and confirmed that there were no survivors.

The deaths represent a painful loss for the military community and for Alaska’s close-knit aviation network. Davis described the people aboard as professionals performing work in a demanding environment.

“This is a devastating loss for our military family and the communities we serve,” Davis said. He added that the immediate priority was supporting the victims’ families, friends and colleagues while expressing gratitude to the search and recovery teams.

The identities of the eight victims had not been publicly released by Friday morning as officials worked to notify their next of kin.

Authorities have also not established what specifically brought the passengers to the radar installation or what caused the aircraft to crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s preliminary account identified the aircraft as a Cessna 441 and said the aircraft went down west of the radar site’s airport at about 12.15pm local time on Thursday.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the cause.

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski also offered condolences and acknowledged the response by the US Coast Guard, NTSB, Alaska State Troopers and the Rescue Coordination Center.

Murkowski said she had travelled extensively with Security Aviation and had met pilots working for the Alaska charter operator.

The crash has drawn particular attention because Cape Newenham is among Alaska’s most remote aviation destinations.

The airport is a private-use facility associated with the long-range radar installation and is not open to the general public.

Current Federal Aviation Administration information lists the airport at an elevation of about 531 feet and identifies it as being roughly one mile from Cape Newenham.

The radar site itself forms part of a wider network used to monitor aircraft activity in Alaskan airspace and along the state’s borders.

Alaskan Command said the installation is managed by the Pacific Air Forces Regional Support Center.

Cape Newenham’s military role has deep roots. The site began operating as an Air Force station in the 1950s and was redesignated as a Long Range Radar site in the early 1980s. It remains part of Alaska’s wider radar surveillance system.

The airport’s isolation also presents practical challenges for emergency response.

Federal aviation information describes the facility as a private-use airport without a control tower, while historical accounts of Alaska’s radar network show that airstrips at remote sites were built to accommodate military and support aircraft serving isolated installations.

For now, investigators face the difficult task of establishing what happened in the final moments of the flight.

No cause has been announced, and officials have cautioned that the information available remains preliminary.

The investigation is expected to examine the aircraft, flight path, weather, maintenance records and other operational factors before any definitive explanation is reached.

Until those findings emerge, the focus remains on recovering the victims, notifying their families and supporting those affected by a tragedy that has reverberated far beyond the isolated Alaskan site.
