Airtel Africa promises stronger customer experience

Airtel Africa has renewed its customer service commitment across its 14 operating markets as the telecommunications group marked Customer Service Week 2026 on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, with CEO Sunil Taldar pledging stronger networks, digital innovation and closer engagement with the company’s 183.5 million customers.

The company’s Airtel Africa customer service campaign is being held under the theme “The Extra Mile”, reflecting its stated ambition to move beyond basic connectivity and respond more closely to changing customer expectations.

Taldar said the theme captures the company’s approach to understanding customers and turning their feedback into action.

“The theme of this year’s events, The Extra Mile, is aligned with our unwavering commitment to always go the extra mile for our customers by transforming their experience, listening to them, learning from them and acting on their needs and expectations,” Taldar said.

Airtel Africa said customer experience is being supported by continued investment in infrastructure.

Over the past year, the company added more than 3,250 network sites and 3,200 kilometres of fibre, taking its network to 40,378 sites as of March 2026.

Its total fibre footprint stood at about 81,900 kilometres.

The investment comes as demand for mobile data and digital services continues to rise across Airtel Africa’s markets.

The company reported 84.2 million data customers in its 2025/26 financial year, while its overall customer base grew by 10.5 per cent to 183.5 million.

Airtel Africa has also been exploring technology beyond conventional mobile infrastructure.

In August 2026, the company commercially deployed direct-to-device satellite connectivity in the Democratic Republic of Congo, making it the first Airtel Africa market to move the technology from testing into commercial service.

The satellite service is intended to help customers in underserved areas maintain connectivity where conventional mobile network infrastructure may not reach, provided compatible devices have a clear view of the sky.

Another customer-focused initiative is Airtel’s AI-powered Spam Alert service, designed to identify and block suspected spam SMS messages while giving subscribers real-time updates.

The move reflects a broader attempt to use technology not only to expand connectivity but also to improve safety and convenience for customers.

The company is also investing in its retail and distribution network, alongside digital channels designed to make interactions with Airtel easier.

Airtel Africa says its customer care ecosystem includes more than 540 stores, 24-hour call centres, email and social media support, as well as digital self-service platforms such as the MyAirtel and SmartCash apps.

For Taldar, however, customer experience goes beyond infrastructure and technology.

He said Airtel employees would use Customer Service Week to engage directly with customers across the group’s markets and gain a clearer understanding of their concerns.

“Our employees will join the frontline teams across our 14 markets to engage with our customers to feel their pulse and devise better ways of providing them with reliable and delightful services,” he said.

The focus comes against the backdrop of Airtel Africa’s broader strategy, which places customer experience at the centre of its business alongside network investment, digital inclusion and financial inclusion.

The company says the approach is intended to help bridge Africa’s digital divide while supporting economic opportunities for individuals and businesses. Airtel Africa
Airtel Africa’s latest customer service push also builds on a longer period of network expansion.

The company’s customer base stood at 152.7 million in March 2024, rising to 166.1 million in March 2025 before reaching 183.5 million in March 2026.

Network sites increased from more than 34,500 in 2024 to 37,117 in 2025 and 40,378 in 2026. Airtel Africa
The figures underline the scale of the challenge facing the company as its customer base expands.

For Airtel Africa, delivering a powerful customer experience increasingly depends on ensuring that network investment, digital tools and human interaction develop together.

Customer Service Week therefore provides more than an annual celebration for the company.

It offers Airtel Africa an opportunity to reinforce its promise that customer feedback should influence how its services evolve across its diverse African markets.
