JMG commissions hybrid solar system for La Chaumiere

JMG Limited and La Chaumiere Group have commissioned an advanced hybrid solar power system in Lagos, with Hussein Abbas, Head of the Solar Division at JMG Limited, overseeing a project designed to strengthen the hospitality group’s energy reliability, reduce diesel dependence and lower operating costs.

The JMG hybrid solar system combines 133.12kWp of solar photovoltaic generation, 160kW of hybrid inverter capacity and 163.84kWh of high-voltage lithium battery storage.

According to JMG, the integrated system is expected to generate approximately 210.86MWh of clean electricity annually, supplying a substantial share of La Chaumiere Group’s daily energy requirements while providing backup capacity for its operations.

The project comes as Nigerian businesses continue to contend with high energy costs and unreliable grid supply.

Manufacturers spent ₦1.34 trillion on alternative electricity sources in 2025, according to data from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, highlighting the financial pressure created by dependence on privately generated power.

Diesel costs have added to that pressure.

The Guardian reported in September that diesel prices had climbed to about ₦2,100 per litre in Lagos and Ogun, with energy-related expenses accounting for more than half of production costs for some manufacturers.

Against that backdrop, the La Chaumiere project is expected to offset about 57,000 litres of diesel consumption each year. JMG estimates that the reduction could translate into more than ₦102 million in annual fuel savings.

The system is also projected to prevent more than 76 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere annually, adding an environmental benefit to the project’s expected financial and operational gains.

JMG said the system was engineered following detailed load analysis using a Fluke Load Analyzer and PVsyst simulation software.

The design incorporates LONGi solar modules, Deye hybrid inverters and Deye high-voltage lithium battery storage.

For La Chaumiere Group, the energy upgrade is particularly relevant to an industry where uninterrupted electricity supports refrigeration, food preparation, lighting, climate control and other daily hospitality operations.

La Chaumiere Group operates a portfolio of premium hospitality concepts, including fine-dining restaurants, Lebanese and Syrian cuisine outlets, specialty coffee destinations and handcrafted popsicle brands.

JMG said the partnership was intended to provide the group with cleaner and more resilient energy as its operations continue to grow.

Speaking on the project, Hussein Abbas, Head of Solar Division at JMG, said hospitality businesses depend on reliable electricity to maintain the quality of their customer experience.

“Hospitality businesses rely on uninterrupted power to deliver exceptional customer experiences every day.”

Abbas added that the partnership demonstrates how hybrid energy systems can help businesses reduce operating costs while improving reliability and sustainability.

The project forms part of a wider expansion of JMG’s renewable-energy activities.

JMG says it has operated in Nigeria since 1998 and has expanded from generator maintenance into integrated power, solar, cooling, electrical, industrial and other engineering solutions.

Its corporate profile states that the company has supplied more than 1.4GW of power and operates a network of branches across Nigeria.

JMG’s solar division has also delivered other hybrid installations.

Its project portfolio includes a hybrid solar system at its Victoria Island branch and a solar installation for St-Catherine Specialist Hospital in Abuja, reflecting the company’s broader push into commercial and institutional renewable-energy solutions.

The shift towards hybrid solar is occurring within a broader Nigerian energy market where businesses are seeking alternatives to diesel generation.

The World Bank has identified commercial and industrial captive generation, including solar and battery systems, as a significant opportunity in Nigeria, noting that businesses have increasingly adopted such solutions as a hedge against high diesel prices and tariff increases.

The World Bank’s Nigeria Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-Up programme is also aimed at expanding clean-energy access and reducing dependence on costly and polluting petrol and diesel generators.

For La Chaumiere Group, the newly commissioned installation offers a practical response to those pressures.

By combining solar generation with battery storage and hybrid inverter technology, the system is intended to provide more predictable power while reducing exposure to diesel costs.

The projected annual savings, lower fuel consumption and emissions reduction underline the potential commercial and environmental impact of the project, although the figures remain projections based on the system’s expected performance and operating conditions.
