Ex-Scottish police officer jailed 12 years for rape

A former Police Scotland sergeant, Campbell Petrie, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being convicted of raping two women and committing other sexual and physical offences against them over a 17-year period.

Petrie was found guilty of eight charges, including four counts of rape, at the High Court in Glasgow, according to reports.

The offences were committed against the two women in Glasgow between 2006 and 2023.

Petrie denied the allegations.

Judge Alistair Watson said the sentence reflected the “seriousness and persistence” of Petrie’s offending, adding that both women had suffered lasting psychological harm as a result of his actions.

The judge also acknowledged the accounts given by the victims and praised their courage throughout the legal proceedings.

“It was obvious that they suffer enduring pain for what you did to them,” Watson told Petrie.

In addition to the 12-year prison sentence, Petrie will be subjected to three years of supervision and monitoring after his release.

He will also be placed on the sex offenders register.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Mairs described Petrie’s offences as a series of “severely abusive, exploitative and violent crimes towards women”.

He said he hoped the sentence would provide the victims with some measure of closure and comfort.

Concerns about Petrie’s behaviour reportedly emerged as far back as 2009, when one of the women reported him for threatening behaviour.

He was detained at a police station for five hours at the time, but no further action was taken because investigators considered there was insufficient evidence.

A specialist sexual crime investigation was eventually launched in 2023 after a second woman came forward with an allegation of rape.

Petrie was arrested, charged and suspended from duty in December 2023 before retiring from Police Scotland a year later.

The case has renewed scrutiny of vetting procedures within Police Scotland.

A nationwide “historic data wash” carried out in 2023 following the cases of Metropolitan Police officers Wayne Couzens and David Carrick reportedly failed to uncover previously unknown information about Petrie.

Police Scotland Chief Constable Jo Farrell disclosed earlier this month that 45 serving officers were suspended over allegations involving violence against women and girls.

New regulations introduced in 2026 are expected to require about 8,000 police officers and staff to undergo fresh vetting checks, with priority given to long-serving personnel and those working closely with vulnerable people.

Petrie’s conviction is also among a series of recent cases involving current and former Police Scotland officers accused or convicted of serious sexual offences, intensifying calls for stronger safeguards within the force.
