Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving Portugal’s national team camp following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus over playing time, with the punishment announced on Monday, 19 October 2026.

The 41-year-old Al-Nassr forward received the minimum suspension permitted under the federation’s disciplinary regulations, which provide for bans ranging from one to six months for players who leave the national team without authorisation.

However, Ronaldo has already served 19 days of the suspension, which took effect on 1 October, the day Portugal faced Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.

He is therefore expected to complete the ban by the end of October, leaving him eligible for Portugal’s November fixtures.

The disciplinary action follows Ronaldo’s abrupt departure from the national team camp after two successive disagreements over his involvement in Portugal’s Nations League campaign.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward was left on the bench against Norway on 27 September after warming up at half-time without being introduced.

He subsequently learnt that he would not start against Denmark on 1 October, prompting his departure from the squad.

Ronaldo later accused Jesus of breaking promises made during discussions about his role in the team.

The dispute escalated after the Portugal coach addressed the situation at a press conference ahead of the Denmark fixture.

In a lengthy statement published on 6 October, Ronaldo apologised to his teammates and Portuguese supporters while accepting responsibility for his decision to leave camp.

“I owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp,” Ronaldo said. “Despite the absolute breakdown of trust in the head coach’s word… I shouldn’t have done it. The responsibility is mine alone.”

The FPF disciplinary committee said it considered the remorse expressed in Ronaldo’s statement when determining the punishment.

His willingness to accept the consequences of his actions helped support the decision to impose the minimum suspension.

Ronaldo had previously acknowledged that his position as captain made his conduct particularly important, stating that he understood the need for disciplinary consequences.

Despite the controversy, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner maintained that he had no intention of retiring from international football.

He reiterated his readiness to represent Portugal and compete for further honours with the national team.

Jesus had also indicated that Ronaldo could return to the squad if he remained committed to international duty and continued performing for his Saudi Arabian club, Al-Nassr.

Portugal’s results during Ronaldo’s absence have added another dimension to the debate surrounding the incident.

The national team won all four of its Nations League matches without its captain and secured qualification for the quarter-finals with two games to spare.

Portugal are scheduled to host Denmark on 14 November before travelling to face Wales on 17 November in their final Group A4 fixtures.

Ronaldo is expected to be available for both matches once his suspension expires.

The episode comes at a significant stage in the veteran forward’s international career.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and the most-capped player in men’s international football, records that underline his enduring importance to the national team.

His departure, however, has raised questions about the balance between a senior player’s expectations, a coach’s authority and the collective responsibilities attached to international football.

While the suspension brings a formal conclusion to the immediate disciplinary case, the longer-term implications for Ronaldo’s relationship with Jesus and the Portugal squad remain to be seen.

For now, the punishment is unlikely to affect Portugal’s November Nations League campaign, but the incident serves as a reminder that even one of football’s most decorated players remains subject to team rules and disciplinary procedures.
