Nigeria’s history has been shaped by individuals who contributed to business, politics, medicine, education and public service.

Among them were Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh, Professor Horatio Oritsejolomi Thomas and Chief Edwin Clark, whose careers spanned different sectors and periods of the country’s development.

Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh began his career at the Bata Shoe Company in 1935 as a clerk.

Through private study, he qualified as an accountant in 1942 and later became chief clerk in Lagos.

He subsequently served as deputy manager of the company’s Sapele branch before being sent to Czechoslovakia for further studies.

There, he obtained diplomas in business administration and chiropody.

He was in the country during the communist coup d’état of 1948.

After returning to Nigeria, Okotie-Eboh established himself as an entrepreneur, trading in timber and rubber while investing in schools and other businesses.

These ventures helped him build his personal fortune.

His political career began in 1951 when he was elected to the Western Region House of Assembly.

He had also served as the first secretary of the Warri National Union and secretary-general of the Itsekiri National Society.

In 1954, he entered the Federal House of Representatives as the member representing Warri Division.

That year, he became national treasurer of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), which was later renamed the National Council of Nigerian Citizens.

He was appointed Federal Minister of Labour in 1955 and became Minister of Finance in 1957, while also serving as leader of the NCNC parliamentary party in the Federal House.

Okotie-Eboh remained in the influential finance portfolio until the end of Nigeria’s First Republic in 1966.

His career brought together entrepreneurship, political organisation and national economic administration.

Professor Horatio Oritsejolomi Thomas (1917–1979) was a distinguished surgeon, university teacher and administrator who contributed to the development of medical education in Nigeria.

Born in Sapele in 1917, Thomas came from a family that owned rubber plantations.

He attended Methodist Boys’ High School in Lagos before studying medicine at the University of Birmingham in England.

After completing his studies, he worked as an anatomy lecturer at Birmingham and served as a surgeon in several British hospitals.

He also trained in reconstructive and plastic surgery under the renowned surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe.

Thomas returned to Nigeria in 1949 and joined the pioneering academic staff of University College, Ibadan, which operated in association with the University of London.

He taught surgery at the institution during a formative period in the development of higher education and medical training in Nigeria.

In 1953, he returned to Britain for specialist training in plastic surgery at East Grinstead, Sussex.

He later resumed his work in Ibadan, where he became one of the institution’s respected academic and departmental leaders.

In 1962, following the establishment of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and the University of Lagos College of Medicine, Thomas became head of the Department of Surgery.

He subsequently served as Dean of the Medical School, chairman of the LUTH Board of Management and provost of the College of Medicine.

During his seven-year leadership of the college, he also served briefly as acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos.

In 1972, Thomas was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan. He held the position until his retirement in 1975.

His career combined surgical practice, specialist training, teaching and university administration, helping to shape Nigeria’s emerging medical education system.

Chief Edwin Clark (May 25, 1927–February 17, 2025) was a Nigerian politician, educator and Niger Delta advocate who held public office under successive administrations.

He attended primary and secondary schools in Effurun, Okrika and Afugbene before continuing his education at a government teacher-training college.

He subsequently worked briefly as a schoolteacher before travelling to the United Kingdom to study law.

Clark entered politics during the pre-independence period, becoming a councillor representing Bomadi in 1953. He later joined the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons.

Between 1966 and 1975, he held positions during the administrations of military leaders in the former Mid-Western Region and at the federal level.

In 1966, he served on an advisory committee to the region’s military governor, David Ejoor, and later became a commissioner for education and finance in the Mid-Western Region.

In 1975, Clark was appointed Federal Commissioner of Information under the administration of General Yakubu Gowon.

During the Second Republic, he served on the national executive committee of the National Party of Nigeria and became the party’s treasurer in Bendel State.

In 1983, he briefly served as a senator during the final months of the Shehu Shagari administration.

From the 1990s, Clark became a prominent advocate for the Ijaw people and the wider Niger Delta.

He participated in delegations to political leaders and supported efforts to address ethnic tensions, development concerns and questions affecting the region.

In 2015, he founded Edwin Clark University. The following year, he helped establish the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), an organisation that advocates dialogue with stakeholders and greater government attention to restructuring, development and security in the Niger Delta.

Clark remained a prominent voice on regional and national affairs, particularly issues concerning the Niger Delta, until his death in February 2025.

Festus Okotie-Eboh, Oritsejolomi Thomas and Edwin Clark pursued different careers, but each contributed to an aspect of Nigeria’s development.

Okotie-Eboh combined business experience with national political leadership and financial administration.

Thomas advanced medical practice, professional training and university leadership. Clark participated in political administration and became a prominent advocate for the Niger Delta.
