The House of Representatives has threatened to issue warrants of arrest against the chief executives of major telecommunications companies over their failure to appear before a committee investigating persistent poor network services across the country.
The House Ad Hoc Committee investigating telecommunications service quality, chaired by Rep. Olumide Osoba, directed the chief executives of MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, Mafab Communications and other licensed operators to appear before it on November 4, 2026.
The lawmakers rejected an attempt by the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) to represent the companies through its chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo.
They insisted that each operator must personally account for its service delivery and address complaints relating to dropped calls, slow internet connectivity, failed transactions and inadequate network coverage.
The committee had earlier invited the operators on October 21. When the companies sent a representative instead of their chief executives, lawmakers expressed displeasure and warned that failure to comply with the new deadline could result in arrest warrants.
Lawmakers noted that the companies are individually licensed and cannot rely on an industry association to avoid appearing before the legislature.
The Nigerian Communications Commission had earlier disclosed that operators compensated millions of subscribers for poor service in 2026, while also recording hundreds of thousands of consumer complaints in the first half of the year.
