Although the year, 2020 left a lot of loopholes in all sectors of our life for obvious reasons – the Covid-19 emergence – the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) is not relenting in its efforts to carry out one of its annual programs.

The ‘No Music Day’ which has been on for quite some years now and designed primarily to create the awareness on why artistes must receive commensurate reward and payment for their works is it.

It holds every September 1 with a visit to broadcast stations and parley with the entire media as well as lectures on the topical issue.

It is also a day set aside to consciously draw the attention of all about the widespread infringement of the rights of intellectual property owners, especially song writers, composers, performers, etc, in the nation’s music industry.

As usual, COSON will use the program which has actually been on for over a decade today, to call on broadcast stations to devote more of their airtime on that day to programs which highlight the various abuses in the Nigerian music arena to show solidarity with the players and stakeholders.

The print and social media are also enjoined to do special features on the infringement of intellectual property in Africa as a whole. In fact the premises of the magnificent COSON House is already wearing a new look for the big day.

The “No Music Day” dates back to that historic  week in 2009 when Nigerian artistes stormed the National Arts Theatre and embarked on a hunger strike to protest the abuse of their rights and works.
