‘Soldier girl!’ Journalist exposes U.S. hypocrisy over Okonjo-Iweala’s WTO nomination

As reactions continue to trail the United States’ refusal to endorse Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to lead the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Deputy Editor, THISDAY on Sunday, Wale Olaleye, has added his voice to the multitude of Nigerians unhappy with the development.

Recall that despite most of the 164 member states that comprise the WTO supported the former Nigerian finance minister to take up the role, the US delegation opposed the move, saying it supported South Korean Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee instead.

In a writeup titled ‘At a Time Like This’, Olaleye lambasted the US of being hypocritical despite the fact that the Nigeria’s ex-finance minister is a dual citizen of both countries.

He accused the Donald Trump led-administration of exhibiting extreme bitterness when it comes to international politics.

The respected Nigerian journalist wrote:

“To think Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala also carries a BLUE PASSPORT, standing confidently astride between Nigeria and the US, says a lot about the US and her leadership particularly, when it comes to their international politics fraught with bile.

“This, more than anything else, exposes their vulnerability as not quite better than many nations of the world with their unbridled biases, clothed in their very familiar fault lines.

“Anybody can try to explain away why they’re siding against their own “citizen” with crass illogicality, it yet would not cancel out the alternative facts on why they deliberately created a stalemate at WTO.”

Olaleye, however, urged the Nigerian candidate not to be troubled as what is meant to happen will definitely come to pass.

“Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, peace, be still. What’s going to be will definitely be, so long God wills. You’ve come a long way on this and the whole world is proud of you.

“Indeed, you’ve paid your dues, and very much so.

“You’re a pride of Africa and the black race in general. A million haters can’t put you down. Go ma’am, our ‘soldier girl’👍,” he concluded.
